Not sure why I liked Captain Tony's so much, but I did. I like how it is divey and dark and not as crazy packed as other bars were. They had live music and pool tables and good fast bar service. I felt comfortable and enjoyed my time here. The drinks were good and all the people in the bar seemed to be having fun.

Great drinks, good music, personable bar tender. What more could you ask for in a bar? Oh, and also business cards, bras, patches, money, swords, and a chastity belt tacked to the ceiling. Those overly fastidious folks who complained about the smell and general diveness just don't understand the point of a gem like this one.

Loved this. Got sucked into the whole Haunted Key West while visiting so of course we had to come here. Hanging Tree in the middle of the bar, tombstones in the floor, and real skeleton hanging at the bar! A classic Dive Bar as everyone says, from the canned beer to bras hanging down from the ceiling! Even tried thawing a quarter into the mouth of the fish that hangs outside for good luck, but we had a fun time trying!

Our first "official stop" in Key West, definitely memorable. We were there before sundown, before the party really started, but our bartender looked like he'd been partying alllllll day. Love it. Of course the 3 of us got the punch and party cup, and some more. It's awesomely delicious. Both bartenders were quite nice and chatty - one gave us the lowdown on the brassieres/bills/business cards, another and myself had a hearty conversation about Weeds (TV show). The best part after leaving was my brother and I meeting our red-faced bartender at 4AM outside Sloppy Joes, and he was definitely more red-faced than in the daytime. Gotta love the Key West lifestyle!

Walked in, strolled around and left because of the strong smell of urine--which only served to mask the stench of smoke. I understand why Sloppy Joe's moved so many years ago. Minuscule beer list. Pass on by.

If you like Jimmy Buffet and know his songs this is a place to stop in and have a drink. Loved going there when Capt. Tony would stop in and sign shirts and share stories (may in RIP). They usually have some good entertainment. The bar tenders are great and have some good stories to share.

Gotta love Key West and all it's history which Captain Tony is definitely right up there with Hemmingway! Hop in for one of the signature drinks or the Captain Tony's Rum Punch which send's you off with a logo'd cup. Notice the headstone at the base of the tree of the woman who lived from 1900 to 1950. Story has it that Tony loved beautiful women, even if they were married. Her husband brought her headstone to Captain Tony's when he found love letters between the two after her death in 1950. "You want to be with my wife. Here ya go!" If deciding of a token from your visit, buy the book. "Life Lessons of a Legend" of Captain Tony Tarracino. His life, and insight into his close friendship with Jimmy Buffet. Great fun exciting read:)

Not very good at all. We were lolling for the original Hamingway's bar but I can't be this. There is no one here.

A great joint, chock full of history and just a tad away from the madness of Duval St.

This place is great fun and the staff are all lovely people. The vibe is great and the live music was very entertaining. I was on a cruise and Key West was one of our stops. We spent the day sightseeing and decided to have one drink before getting back on the ship. We went to Captain Tonys and enjoyed ourselves very much. I got back on the ship and realized I left my cell phone in the bar. Oh no! I called the next day when I got back to New York and spoke to Dan who had my phone and he mailed it to me! He went way above and beyond and I greatly appreciate his kindness. I will always go back to Captain Tony's when I am in Key West! Thank you Dan!

This really is an awesome dive bar! After going in the first time, I happened to read the history of the place on haunted Key West.com . That helped put some of the weird feelings I experienced the first time into perspective! Been back several times since and I won't be using the ladies room there.

Been here many times and my favorite spot on Duval Street to hang out and people watch. My all-time best visit was in 2003 when my wife went shopping and I decided to hang out at the saloon during the day. Low and behold, Captain Tony showed up and sat down with me at my table and I enjoyed the great stories that he shared with all. Is this place a dive? Yep. Bra's and business cards everywhere? Yep. A place you can relax and enjoy a nice beer and remember the "good ol Days" Without question.

  • Kari W.

We only stopped for beers our first day and bought the cups expecting to go back. Sadly we never made it back. Oh well. We loved the atmosphere and music!

This is one place you should come while in Key West. Captain Tony has a legacy a mile long. Many famous musicians and Movie Stars came here. You never know who you will see here. Ladies if you dare, you can hang your Bra in the rafters, Oh yes you have to sign it also. The band was OK when we were there. Good dance floor and bar. The service is OK, the place was packed when we went there. Lots of history on the walls with different famous people with Captain Tony. It is a Key West Must to do, if you drink or not. visit captain Tony's, I am sure you will be glad you did. I sure was, what I can remember of it.

A must visit in Key West. The bar has a lot of history, from when Hemingway hung out there in the 30s, to Jimmy Buffet's performances there in the 60s/70s, to Capt. Tony's successful mayoral run in the 80s. They even have an old 19th century grave next to one of the pool tables. For drinks, there is no reason to get anything besides their famous Pirate's Punch ($7). Unless maybe you don't like rum, but the stuff is delicious, just try it. Captain Tony's is a Key West original and if you don't at least stop off here when you're out on Duval St, you're missing out.

  • Steven D.

Pirate punch! Pirate punch! Pirate punch! Must try pirate punch! Look up the crazy history lesson of the place. Take plenty of pictures, you might be taking one with a ghost. Great music and great vibe.

  • Mike D.

Captain Tony's was one of the rougher bars on the strip. It seemed like all of the other bars we went to were packed and Captain Tony's was not busy at all. The good news was that we got a table right away. Very dark and kind of dirty. Seemed to be out of a lot of the drinks that I wanted to order. I would give it another chance but would go to many other bars first.

    (2)
  • Jenn A.

The captain's punch.... yum!! I could drink them all day but bad things would happen. Make sure you bring an extra business card to stash somewhere in the ceiling.

  • Gary S.

When you come to Key West this should be on the top of your list for bars to visit. Remember the bars in this town are mostly dive bars but this is the best and here are a couple reasons why. 1. It's dark (Have to get out of the sun at some point) 2. It's cold (Good AC is essential for any good dive bar) 3. You can smoke (Where in this world can you do that any more) 4. Lots to look at (They have a lot of crap hanging from the ceiling, see pics I posted) 5. Live Music (This is where Jimmy Buffet use to perform before he was famous) 6. Pirate Punch (This should be 6-10 but I will just write it once)

  • Kevin D.

Great bar great history. Definitely not fancy very divey in a great way. My wife was happy that they did wine she is cool with plastic. Have a foozeball table and garage doors open to the street. Definitely check this place out even though most of the bars are touristy along here this one didn't feel as touristy as most.

A true dive bar. I am always ready to leave after one drink.

If any of you were here over the 4th, YES THAT WAS ME REQUESTING 'LAST MANGO IN PARIS' while I drank rum. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, stop reading and get educated on this cool bar before you go...or else you want understand how radical it is. I'm a huge, HUGE Buffett fan, as exampled by a full sleeve of Buffett-themed tattoos and lyrics down my entire right arm (true story). So, for years I've jammed Last Mango in Paris, Woman Goin' Crazy on Caroline Street, Tin Cup Chalice, etc, etc, etc, and even more etc and always tried to imagine what Captain Tony's would look like. It was just as I expected. And to my surprise, the few times I went last week I always found a bar stool, great drinks, and a friendly vibe. It's just too bad it was a few years too late because I would've loved to meet Captain Tony. The bar has a lot of history. Thousands upon thousands of business cars hang in every crevice of the bar behind hundreds of bras that are collecting dust from the years. If you read "Life Lessons of a Legend", you will learn that Captain Tony had a thing for breasts ( I bought the book next door at Margaritaville) and I'm assuming that's why the bras are there. I was there in the afternoons and trudged through the pouring rain on the evening of July 4th just to go by myself and imagine all the history that took place in here. I imagined Buffett playing for the first time one the stage and how cool it would've been to be a fly on the wall and listen to a conversation between him and Captain Tony after a few rum drinks. There was a guy playing acoustic and singing every time I walked in and sat down over the week and the music was always good. There are posters and enlarged covers from the Key West Citizen of when Tony was elected mayor, photos of Captain Tony and Jimmy Buffett, and just the overall ambiance of a bar with a heck of a lot of history. I learned on the ghost tour the evening before that the big tree that grows in the bar is apparently where a girl was hung like a hundred years ago. Not sure if that's true but it adds to the mystery of the bar. I have to say, for me and for probably any Buffett fan, that the coolest part of the bar is the the framed handwriting of Buffett in the bathroom with the chorus of Last Mango in Paris hanging from the wall. Pretty nostalgic. If you are looking for a fun bar with a lot of history, you gotta check out Captain Tony's. I'm heading back down to Key West this week for two nights and I plan on spending most of my time here. LISTEN TO LAST MANGO IN PARIS BEFORE YOU GO :)

As big parrot-heads, this was a must-stop on our trip to Key West. We expected a dive, and we saw a dive, but we expected something ... more; not sure what, but we can at least say "We went down to Captain Tony's, to get out of the heat". The bartender took our drink order and was never heard from again, though the drinks were pretty good; had he been a little more attentive we might have stayed around for a few more. The guitar player they had the night we were there was great and was doing a Name-That-Tune thing which was fun. Once he went on break, our drinks were gone with nobody to refill them so we split; had it not been for the guitar player, we'd probably be giving Captain Tony's only 2 stars.

    (3)
  • Nancy H.

I love Capt. Tony's before the night gets too wild. Bartenders are engaging and fun, and the rum runner is one of the best in Key West. And the historical aspect can't be beat.

This place is pretty cool if you stumble in before 'party time' on Duval. The misses and I were here for a little while and got into a pretty entertaining conversation with a couple of locals. I think thats a regular happening when you're in Key West, though. The drinks are the same price as across the street so you wont save any money by coming in here but its a pretty cool place nonetheless. There are signed bras all over the ceiling and the place just looks like allot has happened within its walls. The bar tender told us all about how it used to be the original Sloppy Joes and then a local showed us the quarter game with the fish on top of the main entrance. You stand with your back to the bar, throw a quarter over your head and try and get it into the mouth of the fish. Apparently you get a free drink if you make it. (we tried it.. its hard) Would pass through next time I'm in town.

    (4)
  • Antonio M.

Well I have to give it three stars just on the mere fact it has my name in it!!!

    (3)
  • Kevin B.

Captain Tony's is dark and dank, just what you would expect a bar in Key West to be like off of Duval street. Drinks are strong and reasonably priced and there is live music most of the time. It's a nice little place to stop and get away from the crowd.

    (4)
  • April K.

Service was great here! We learned about this place while on one of the famous ghost tours. There is a lot of history to this bar. We have pictures of supposedly haunted spots in the bar and even a skeleton that is in the back of the bar. Ask the bar tender and he will take a photo of it with your camera if you don't believe me. For sure this place is one of the staples of Key West. Glad that we stumbled up it.

  • Meghan A.

Im all for a dive bar, but this place took it to a whole new level. We walked in and it was so smokey my mother who is a heavy smoker couldn't tolerate it. We walked around the bar for 3-4 minutes looking for a place to settle in, but the silence (there was no music playing for this entire time) and the overall uncleanliness were just too much for us to handle. Despite looking quite awkward and confused, the bartender (who was not busy) made no attempt to welcome us. 2 stars because we never actually ordered anything, so it's possible we missed out on something great..? Although a drink would have to be pretty damn good for me to have stayed in there.

  • Nicole A.

Make sure to check out the "souvenir" glasses available. We ended up with some cheap plastic glasses (22 oz) and only later saw that there were pint glasses available. Wished we would have gotten those. The Capt Tony's beer was fine, but not amazing (I have high standars). The entertainment was much lower-key than many of the other bars, but was quite good. One guy, playing guitar and singing Jimmy Buffett songs and others, but at a volume where you can still talk. The prices are good and the ambiance is what trendy "dive bars" aim for. There is a tree in the middle of the floor. That was our favorite. Sure there are many bras and interesting graffiti and all sort of stuff on the wall... but a tree. We like trees. Regardless of who you are or what you are into, make sure you make this part of your visit to Key West.

Dive Bar and thats about all I can say, I don't necessarily like them or hate them! But I found myself in Key West on kinda last minute vacay and that s really all there is on Duval. Bras and dollar bills on the walls how original, the bartender was kinda of a dick and you could tell he had seen it all over the years. If I find myself in the Keys again, I probably won't go back in here. God forbid a girl has to go to the bathroom in here, my GF said it was disgusting. My GF did say that her pirate punch was tasty, it sure did turn her night around. Nothing amazing here, just stop in for a quickie

What's left to say about this historic landmark that hasn't been said already? Capt Tony's Saloon where it seems everyone is a friend, old or new. The music, live or piped in is always great and I'm amazed what the bands bring in terms of songs. My wife and I went here the night we got engaged, I requested "Thank You" from Led Zeppelin and the band broke right into it. I don't know who was more shocked, me for the band belting it out or the band for my requesting this song out of left field. Sept 2005 this was the first stop on my bachelor party. Shortly after arriving and putting down several beers, Capt. Tony himself walked in. We all got to meet him, shake his hand and take pictures with him. What a great and friendly guy he was. Early or late, this is a great place to visit. If you haven't yet, be sure to get there on your next trip to Key West.

A bar full of history. My wife, the Buffett fan that she is, just HAD to come here. Great atmosphere here. Nice and laid back with a friendly staff. My wife ordered the Pirate Punch and was very pleased - a nice strong drink that tastes anything but. Look around the walls for things photos and little things to look at or read while you enjoy your time here.

Captain Ton's has some cool history attached to it as it has the oldest liquor license in Florida and was the original Sloppy Joe's that was associated with Earnest Hemmingway. Hemmingway is long gone and Key West is now a huge toursit trap. Still,l I love the Keys and I always make it a point to have a drink at Captain Tony's. The place was an old speak easy that looks as if it hasnt been renovated in years. Much like the rest of Key West it sells tourist crap based on its history and the legend of former owner Captain Tony who was a bootlegger, gambler, and mob affiliate who became the Mayor of Key West. Bottom line its a pricey/tourist trap of a dive bar that prides itself on once being Hemmingways hang out. This is where I am torn. I hate toursit traps but love history and dive bars. In the end the bar always wins me over for at least a beer.

  • Oliver M.

This place is really really cool.. It's dark and grimy but also has that great classic vibe with their low ceilings and stone floors..they have live music, pool tables, and a great staff. Plus there is a ton of crazy crap hanging on the walls like women under garments lol...place is a must

    (5)
  • Jonah K.

Interesting decor, and a cool-ish place. Problem is that the service isn't great. The music is also not very good, you are better off anywhere pretty much for tunes.

    (2)
  • Jeanne D.

There are so many great bars in Key West think twice before you waste time here. The inside is dated and grungy and as a woman I am offended by all of the bras on the ceiling. I guess it is worth a quick look in to see the hanging tree. I had one of their own draft beers, it was adequate, but on the whole there are too many great places to go to in Key West this one is not worth the time.

    (1)
  • Andrea M.

GREAT atmosphere! The music entertainment was awesome, the drinks were great. Loved this place

    (5)
  • Gail S.

This is what Sloppy Joe's wishes it was...it's dive and proud of it. Used to visit back when Tony was mayor of Key West - a true character! This was what Key West was before the influx of tourists and cruise ships. Lots of other history as well - just watch out for the hanging tree. A seat at the bar and a couple of Pirate Punches - a great way to pass a hot Key West afternoon.

  • Maria B.

Capt. Tony's is a must to visit while your in Key West. Just sit at the bar and people watch or look at the ceiling. One of the best bars to visit and have fun!

    (5)
  • Ashley B.

Captain Tony's is very smokey and dark. They only have 2 beers on tap (both crappy). It's owned by the same guy who owns No Name Pub on No Name Key, and I much prefer No Name Pub over Captain Tony's.

    (2)
  • Ken M.

If your into the glitz and glam of a Vegas Strip nightclub this is not the place for you. Captain Tony's captures the charm and history of old Key west. The bartenders are typically on and they can be very friendly. The patrons are there to have fun, listen to good music and drink. Drinks are no cheaper or more expensive then anywhere else on the island, but what CT's does offer is a trip down memory lane and a consistent experience every time you go. I would highly recommend visiting, reading all the articles and having anything that is to your liking. One world, One Human Race..

Awesome bar!! Super friendly bartenders! Met the nicest people there!! Good entertainment too!! :-D

  • Scott K.

Had some drinks here. Neat place.. We got 'Hooked' trying to toss a quarter into the mouth of the fish on the sign out front. It was great fun. (I made it on my 15th try :)... There is so much stuff on the walls inside. Dollar bills, business cards, bras, license plates... Holy cow. There was some live music and some very drunk girls on the other side of the bar.... I am not sure exactly what was happening there but, it looked crazy.

  • Christie M.

If it weren't for the unique historical connection and the fact that we were watching a great musical act, I don't know that Captain Tony's would have been on my Key West bucket list. If bars can be a dime-a-dozen, I wouldn't pay more than a penny to go back. It does have an open-air atmosphere and billiard room, but feels dirty and raw. Nothing here to catch my eye (or taste buds).

Your basic KW saloon, the original Sloppy Joe's of Hemingway fame.

  • Scott B.

Probably my favorite bar in Key West. Successfully avoiding all of the crappy chain restaurants, I literally stumbled (sober) upon Captain Tony's. It's the appearance of a dive bar on the exterior, and definitely lives up to the exterior image inside as well. I take a seat at the bar, and am immediatley greeted by the friendly bartender, Patrick. I take a Heineken, and begin to enjoy the older man playing accoustic cover songs, and the large group of 40ish blonde women that were drinking themselves into Cougar mode. What really sets this bar apart from the others is the history and character that presents itself. The walls are plastered in bras, panties, and lotsa dollar bills. Actually, friendly Patrick conveyed to me that "Captain Tony" was Key West's Mayor back in the day. After about an hour of being entertained by the older man playing Jack Johnson and John Mayer cover songs, watching the 40ish Cougars get inebriated, it was apparent that people were leaving, in droves, with mixed drinks in their hands. Hmmm, I guess that there is no open container law in Key West? Friendly Patrick confirmed that this was true, IF you have your drink in a plastic cup. SOLD! I'll take one of those famous punch thingies that everyone is getting so damn giddy on. $23 later, I leave with Captain Tony's punch in hand. When and if I ever return to Key West, this will probably be my first stop.

  • Sara W.

This is hands down the best bar in Key West. I have absolutely no basis for that opinion because I've only ever been to this place and Sloppy J's, but I firmly believe Captain Tony's is the only way to go! The place is covered with character. Bras hanging from the ceiling, the walls covered with business cards, a tree growing through the place, a tombstone under the tree (creepy!), and the list goes on... This place was rockin' during the day and I'd love to go back and see how crazy things get at night. The service was friendly and the pirates punch was awesome - I love the to-go cups too! At one point in the afternoon a pirate came by and had a drink at the bar. Wooden peg leg, parrot and everything. C'mon, if that doesn't say Captain Tony's is the place to party I'm not sure what does! The live music is great too!

    (5)
  • alamedabrian m.

Fun place. One of the bartenders was friendly and attentive; the other not so much. They make good solid mixed drinks at reasonable prices. The timeswe were there, the bands were quite good. All in all, it'd probably be a three star or three point five, but of course it gets a slight upgrade for the fact that a pilgrimage to Captain Tony's is a must for each trip to Key West.

  • Jennifer B.

On our bar crawl, we didn't stay too long, but I am a fan. There are dollar bills, bras and business cards pinned all over the ceiling of this bar. Live music was playing and people were dancing around. Apparently, the drink to order is the Pirate's Punch, served in a take-home plastic cub. To me, the drink tasted a little like gasoline, but it was strong and got tastier with some time.

  • John F.

The Captain is gone but the legend lives on. Well known among both tourists and locals alike, Captain Tony's is located at the site of the original Sloppy Joe's at 428 Greene St. just off of Duval. This was the location when SJs was a Hemmingway favorite. Give me Capt Tony's and the Schooner Wharf Bar and my trip is made! The bar itself is fairly small, but is nearly always crowded. During the day the 'band' usually consists of a guitar player and his drink. They sometimes have full bands in the evening. Recommended drink: Beer, Anything with Rum!

One of the classics of Key West. A definite must-stop.

Over hyped. Over priced. Dirty and smokey. Go in, take a picture, and move on.

A must stop on any proper Key West bar crawl! Order the Pirate's Punch. It's cheap and strong. :)

I think my reviews here are subject to change at a moments notice. I already have one place in mind that I would like to change and another that I would like to re-verify. So this is simply my first impression of this place. It sort of has that island-dive thing going that a few of the bars around here have. It's got Bras and Business cards tacked all over the walls and ceilings and a dirty-gritty kind of feel. That's cool on this island though and this place attracts a big crowd on many nights. Many local bands and entertainers come here to play live music for the fans and tourists that come here to have a drink and bask in the dusky atmosphere. Meanwhile I was here with a couple friends. It was OK. They have a beer here called Captain Tony's Amber Ale which is a special brew apparently available only here and one other place. I mean, it was pretty good. The thing is, I'm used to special beers coming in a nice frosty cold pint-glass. HERE I had 2 choices: A plastic cup and for a 2 dollar up-charge I could have a plastic collectors cup. That's NOT what I want to drink a good beer out of, but keep in mind - this has nothing to do with my rating. A three is because this really is nothing special. It's a dive-bar where you can get stiff drinks (I think) and listen to live music. Apparently it has a history as belonging or being affiliated with one Captain Tony, as well as being the original Sloppy Joe's. So I would say, sure visit it! Come here and check it out. Have fun, have a drink. This is just not the kind of place I personally will go out of my way to visit. I'm sure I'll be back eventually but I'm not like, "Hey! Let's go check out Captain Tony's! YEA!!"

  • Courtney H.

I walked into this place a few times, but had to walk out due to the intense smoke smell. I'm from NC so I've been around smoke a ton, but I am so used to the non smoking rules lately. The place seemed like it would be a great place late at night. The bras all over the place were cool. If i'm ever back in Key West I'll check it out late night.

  • Jimmy P.

Came here a long long time ago with some friends. Definitely a cool and laid back place to grab a beer. The tree in the middle was awesome too. Best Part: I left my business card on the wall somewhere when I visited (I think in 2005) and someone called me from the bar a few years later, just to say hi!!! That was cool!!

    (4)
  • Scott B.

Good little tourist bar in Key West. Beers were well priced and great character. There are tons of Bra's, business cards, license plants, military patches, and police patches all over the place here. You could spend hours and find something interesting on the roof! So good feel to it. They have a stage for the bands and a big dance floor.

    (4)
  • Scott H.

Definitely a "Key Westy" kind of dive amid all the bric-a-brac stapled to the walls and too many abandoned brassieres to count. A tourist myself, I like to think that I don't act like one so I enjoyed the more laid back vibe here over the cacophony down the street at Sloppy Joe's. Cheap beer and a great place to watch the local buskers take a break and down a beer or two.

  • joe c.

This is the diviest dive that is right off the strip in Key West. A lot of great history and the place looks like it's been beaten by a couple of tropical storms in it's day. The help was nice enough and the drinks were strong, but I wouldn't be ordering a martini here. Keep it simple and go w/ Tony's Amber beer or a Mount Gay & Coke. Entertainment was hit & miss while we were there. The first night had a band there that was just too lout and seemed to be playing for themselves. You know those bands made up of rockers from the 70's & 80's that have the money now to buy equipment that is way too big for the places they perform? That is what we were getting. Made it tough to talk and that's usually #1 at a dive bar. Second night was much better w/ a very intoxicated guitar player and a girl with a voice that wouldn't quit. It wasn't perfect, but it really matched the mood of the Keys and we had a blast as we got a bit tipsy. All and all I really liked Tony's. It reminded me of my own local drinking hole, just picked up and put in paradise.

At first, I had my doubts about Captain Tony's. My friends and I walked in and the bouncer greeted us with, "Whoa, whoa! You guys can't come in here. You HAVE to be 21!!" (Uh, yeah. We're over 25, pal. Come on!!) Captain Tony's is a dive, but bartenders are nice and there's room to breathe. After a few $5 amber ales in the souvenir cup (and $3 refills) and a few games of pool, it turned out to be good time. It's much better than the current Sloppy Joe's, which was packed full of people, and I didn't realize it was the original Sloppy Joe's that Hemingway frequented until the next day. Oh, and there's also a giant tree growing through the front of bar AND Key Lime pie next door. Nice.

So I was in Key West for the first time and I had heard that Captain Tony's was a must see spot. Let me tell you my first impression was horrible. We stopped in there at around 6:00 p.m. on July 4th and the service was unimpressive at best. The bartender seemed totally uninterested to pull himself away from the paper he was reading to offer us a drink. To make it worse we walk over to the souvenir stand to take look and the bald guy working asked " can I help you?" our answer was " we are just taking a look". His response was " I'm not trying to sell you anything" in a very put out tone. Overall I would say if you walk by Captain Tony's in Key West, keep on moving because they can care less what level of service they give you. There are plenty of other great bars I have gone to in the last 3 days here that blow this place out of the water.

My wife, Sharon, had never been to Key West. Being an avid Parrothead, however, she couldn't NOT hit Capt. Tony's. Yes, it's every bit the dive she expected. That said, this is a friendly spot with locals and tourists tipping back drinks. Getting beers in the souvenir cup is a good deal as your refills are $3. Capt. Tony Taraceno passed away. Leading his funeral processions were his two sons, ages 70-something and 17. The saloon is like the man, one of a kind!

This was our fav bar in KW. Not too trendy and not filled with the typical drunk college kids. Just the typical drunk drunks. But fun. Also, nice bartender and the drinks weren't too expensive.

I have been going to Key West for 5 years. This bar is the worst bar I have been to. Dark like a dungeon. Bad music, expensive drinks and cheap, small plastic cups. Rude bartenders. Save your money and go 1 block North to the Schooner Wharf Bar. Much friendlier, better food and drinks with nice bartenders.

  • Ryan M.

This is a Key West tradition. They have a couple pool tables, foosball table, live music, a couple TVs, and drinks in the diviest of Key West's dive bars. Dirty place, but great history and great place to hang out. Get the souvenir cup for cheap refills of Captain Tony's Amber beer. This is where lots of the locals and merchants hang out too, so you know it's one of the better spots. Between drinks, wander around and read the old news articles on the walls to get the history of Captain Tony and his saloon. If you're male, don't miss some Jimmy Buffett trivia on the bathroom wall...

  • Jeff H.

Ultimate Dive Bar. Dirty, dark and awesome. Had a guy playing guitar by the door with his dog laying in the guitar case. This is the original building that housed "Sloppy Joe's" when Hemingway drank here. Awesome part of history and a great place to hangout.

Went there the first night we were in town. Glad I checked it out but imo much better bars in downtown. Food was good and even got on the webcam.

As far as dingy dive bars go, this one is division 1. Don't forget to pay respect to the tombstone next to the tree. Yes they are both inside.

    (5)
  • Ashley C.

Great dive bar! Go listen to some music drink some beer and enjoy the years of souvenirs that people have left behind on the walls including bras, business cards, dollar bills and lots of other fun trinkets. One of my favorites!

    What a great place!

Well worth a visit or 2 while in KW! Please don't bother with Sloppy J's!! I'd highly recommend the pirates punch. This saloon has no pretense and oceans of atmosphere. Dive, yes. But such a unique dive. Where else can you visit a saloon which has a former hanging tree growing in and thru the establishment? Cap't Tony's has nightly music from intimate 1 man acoustic to rockin' full bands. You'll see a true slice of all Americans and probably have some good conversations, etc. Enjoy!!

    (4)
  • Laura P.

We had a great time at this bar, excellent pirates punch that will knock you off your feet! The bartender was rad, the kitch on the walls in hilarious! (biggest bra I've ever seen AND a prosthetic leg!) come to the original sloppy joe's, listen to some great live music, and don't drink that punch too fast, it'll get you!

If you happen to be in Key West and can only visit one bar, Captain Tony's is the place to go! Now I haven't been to all of the bars in Key West, but Captain Tony's has great personality, it's what kind if bar you think you'd find in Key West. The walls are covered with signed dollar bills, signed bras hang from the rafters, pictures of Jimmy Buffett with Captain Tony are all over the place, a guy playing the guitar sits by the front door, and the pirate punch is nice and strong! Oh, also there's the old hanging tree growing right though the roof from the middle of the bar, so the story goes they used to hang pirates and other malcontents from it. Another fact is that Captain Tony's used to be the original Sloopys way back when but the owner raised the rent one dollar a week and the bartender bribed the patrons to with free beer to carry everything they could over the where Sloopys is today, supposedly one of the urinals from here is by the pool at the Hemingway house, pretty cool stories down there! Check them out!

I heart you Captain Tony's--- Your beer is good-- there are interesting things to look at and I always have something crazy happen to me there when I visit... The top 5 are 1. Captain Tony Convincing me to let him sign Captain Tony Was Here on my stomach with an arrow pointing down to my crotch (my dad just shook his head when he saw it the next morning) 2. Petting a monkey someone had brought on vaca with them 3. Having Captain Tony crank call my former BF at 2am 4. Having the bad idea to leave my business card up with hundreds of others and having crank calls weekly for about 3 months 5. Posing with various obese people in a drunken state with my siblings Here is a tip..if you get the souvenir cup you get cheap refills all day!

  • Diane R.

Love this bar! This was the last stop on the iphone ghost tour we were following, and it's a good thing... we stumbled out several hours later. Be warned, the punch is potent. Great history here. How many other bars have a real hanging tree growing right in the middle of them, or leftover graves still in the floor?

    (5)
  • Skip I.

Another KW classic bar. If only these walls could talk. Always take in a game of pool here.

    (4)
  • Bill S.

I always go to Captain Tony's my first night in Key West. It's a tradition and you should make it a tradition too! Prices aren't too bad, but your drinking in one of the most historical places in Key West. Make sure you check out the beer bottles filled with holy water in the pool room. Then ask the bartender what they are for.

    (5)
  • Mark D.

I think the reviews here pretty much cover it. No trip to Key West is complete without a stop at Captain Tony's!! I took off one star because they took down my band sticker that I put up in there. Not sure why since everything in there is covered with stickers and business cards.

    (4)
  • Kathleen M.

Stopped in cause I'm a parrot head. Ordered pirates punch for 7$ and received about 1ounce punch and a glass of ice. Also ordered beer, then got charged for 2 punches. Total rip off!!!

  • Andy E.

I go to Capt. Tony's everytime I go to Key West. If you are a snob, stay out because you will not like it a bit. I never noticed the huge tree in the center of the place until my 5th visit, I think this was because I was there for my first drink of the day. All the other times, I had been making my way down Duval Street, stopping along the way before I staggered into Capt. Tony's. It is a cool, cozy, dive of a bar. Nice projection TV in the back.

    (5)
  • Jason P.

All hail the Capt ! Too bad he died 3 years ago. Anyway i was there a week ago and it is def a decent spot. loved the history behind it (original sloppy joes, and where hemingway hung out), the quirkiness picture tree growing inside of the bar and two tombstones. The pool table was a nice touch and they even have video games as well. Try the pirate punch, def wo

It's all about the ambiance and the history at Captain Tony's. Captain Tony's successfully integrates the best elements of Sloppy Joe's and the Green Parrot, becoming a destination for those of us who are after having a drink at a historic dive bar whilst sitting on a barstool once occupied by the likes of Hemingway and Truman.

    (5)
  • Sam H.

Ah, the original Sloppy Joe's. Aside from the tremendous history of this place (Hemingway wrote there and the bar is built around an ancient hanging tree for pirates [yes really]), the drinks and service are top notch. If you want the authentic Key West experience, this is where you go.

  • Joe R.

My pick for "Biggest Fire Hazard I've Ever Seen" (go in and check out the thousands of business cards and bras stapled to the walls and ceilings), this bar is in my "Key West Top 3". The music both during the day (usually a guy singing cover songs with his guitar), and at night (larger band on the big stage in the back), is always good. Drinks are cheap, and they have a couple of pool tables if you're into that, too. Here's a game for Key West first-timers: When you walk up to this bar, look up, and you'll see a sign out front with a giant fish on top of it. Get yourself a quarter, stand with your toes on the curb directly in front of the sign (with your back to the bar), and try to arc a coin into the fish's mouth. Get it in, and... well... you lose 25 cents. Other than that, it's your run-of-the-mill Key West Island-Style dive bar; go on in, have a drink, and take a look at all of the Capt. Tony memorabilia on the walls of the pool room.

  • Tiffany R.

I've been to a LOT of bars in Key West-- this one happens to be a little gentler on your pocketbook, as the beers are relatively inexpensive. And, who wouldn't want to go to a bar with a tree growing through it (Key West's original Hanging Tree, at that!) and bras hanging from the ceiling? Captain Tony's has some very intriguing legends floating around, I highly recommend checking it out if you're ever in the neighborhood!

    (4)
  • Matt K.

Captain Tony's the original Sloppy Joe's before they moved. I am not too sure how to rate this place. Everyone seems to come and eat and get drinks here and love it. The place is clearly old, it used to be the old location of Sloppy Joe's and has been Captain Tony's for a while. There are very mmm interesting things hanging from the ceiling ad the bar gives that whole 'Sailors frequent hangout away from their wifes' kind of feel. Never the less it is a very good bar and one of 'the stops' people make when visiting Key West and there for deserves a 4 star rating. Captain Tony's seems to be more of a bar to visit during the day or at night if you don't want it to be too crowded. If you are looking for a more of a nightlife place, then visit Sloppy Joe's.

    (4)
  • Kristen F.

This was Hemingway's bar! It was exciting to know he'd been there, getting tanked. Otherwise, it was all right. Some drunk dude ran into me and was rude so it kind of turned me off to it, but it wasn't Tony's fault. So I ordered something frozen and poured it out on the sidewalk to my fallen homie, Ernest. You know how we do.

    (3)
  • Jeanne B.

This is a MUST in Key West! Great bar with a lot of history and a lot of bras hanging from every imaginable spot. Beers are plentiful and cheap. There is usually live music at the front of the bar. As a Jimmy Buffett fan, I had to visit and I was not disappointed! Check it out on your Duval Crawl!

    (4)
  • Jon S.

Over the many years I've been visiting Key West Cpt. Tony's has always been the go to bar. It's different that you won't see Cpt. Tony these days, but still one of the best places in town for live music, meeting interesting people, shooting pool, etc. Love it!

    (5)
  • La C.

This place is kinda creepy when looking at the pictures I took. This was our own stop after our pub crawl tour and we were tore back! The bras, papers and what not are pretty overwhelming, how its not a fire hazard I don't know. It's pretty cool to see the bar stools of the folks that have had some drinks here, Walter Cronkite, Dan Ackroyd etc. This place has some good suds on tap too, the Key West Ale is the bomb, I had to buy a souvenir cup just to remember the joint. The live music also gave this place a special touch. I also appreciated the clean, air conditioned bathrooms, something hard to come by in Key West. Can't wait to go back some day! Fun, fun...

    (4)
  • Jeff H.

If you're looking for a dive bar and plan on drinking, this is your place. The punch is excellent - and ends up sneaking up on you, so don't drink too many too fast. This is also an excellent place to meat strangers, strike up a conversation and watch the people out front trying to throw a quarter into the fish's mouth. This is definitely NOT the type of place you go if you're single and looking to hook up though - and it is not a club. This is a drinker's bar, plain and simple. Loads of fun!!

  • Pete J.

If you're ever travelling cross-country & you decide to travel hundreds of miles out of the way just to goto Key West (c'mon, when else are you gonna go?), you owe it to yourself to goto Captain Tony's. I'm a little foggy on the history of the place, but I believe it's the oldest bar in Key West. Hemingway used to drink there constantly. And pirates hang out there to this day. It's like an old west saloon of the high seas. Enter at your own risk. Oh, & get yourself some key lime pie when you're good & tanked later on. You can thank me tomorrow when the hangover subsides.

    (4)
  • Liz S.

Always entertaining and a wicked good pirates punch.

"Dive bar" - yes, five stars - absolutely. Please read the history on this place before and/or after you visit. Suggested reading: Life Lessons of a Legend by Brad Maynard. If you didn't know any better, this is your typical dive bar. If you know better, this bar is loaded with history, stories, spirits, and was owned by a Key West legend, Captin Tony Terracino. I won't tell you the stories, I'll let you research them yourself. All I can say is that I'm sorry I didn't travel to Key west about a year earlier. I would have loved to meet Captain Tony, and I will most certainly be remembering him with Jimmy Buffett at Toyota Park this summer.

Good bands. The drinks are very weak here. Had to order another shot to add to mine.

    (3)
  • Mimi S.

Hands down, one of the best bars in Key West. Live music always. Friendly service, always. You will find me in the back either leading southern gentleman through a drunken yoga sun salutation...or on the Joe Montana stool, pouring beer down my throat. mmm

    (5)
  • Chris K.

Tons of character and history, cheap beer, and even a few pool tables. Definitely worth a stop and have a beer with history. This was the original Sloppy Joe's and where Hemingway used to hang out.

  • Jonathan B.

Ok, there are 100's of worn bras stapled to the ceiling of the bar. Enough said.

    (5)
  • Heather P.

It is a bar in the purest sense. Hemingway drank here as did Buffett so I HAD to go. Had a night tasty and cold cocktail and listened to the music. Just a bar and tables, nothing fancy at all. It was a cool place to be after our day of exploring Key West.

    (5)
  • Darlene D.

If anything, Captain Tony's is rich in history and most likely the matriarch of drinking establishments in old town. There is a tree on the inside (many Key West bars have trees growing through them), where they used to hang people back in the day, and don't forget to pay a visit to the unofficial gravesite of Elvira who perished during a hurricane, which many people seem to overlook and walk right over in the pool room passageway. The bar hasn't changed a lick in 20 years, at least that I have noticed, except it is more run down. With the onslaught accumulation of business cards and paraphernalia over the years, the bar is dark and gloomy. The talent is mediocre at best, which is why I think most people have one and out. It's boring. If you haven't been to Key West or visited this bar, I do recommend you stop here for a quick pop to see what it is all about. Take a moment to view the pictures of Captain Tony, an old salty dog with a witty sense of humor. He always liked to crack a dirty joke and ask for kisses from the ladies, as well as talk of tales long passed with his good friend Ernest Hemingway. A sweet soul who has recently passed a few years back. We love you Captain Tony! Check out these intriguing historical facts including the mysterious haunting of the lady in blue. I just found this site, some pretty cool stuff to read about before you go... alansmysteriousworld.wor…

Stopped by for a quick drink with family and enjoyed it. Of course when you enter you are overwhelmed with the bills and bras on the ceiling and walls. Really neat place to visit. It's very open, a little dark inside, yet the workers are warm and friendly. The acoustic music was great on Sunday and the drinks were really good. The house Amber beer was delicious as well as the house punch. It's definitely an older crowd, at least daytime. I'm not sure how this place is when it's busy at night.

While on a cruise to Key West, I created pub crawl to experience the best bars in Key West. This was the second stop on the crawl, and we enjoyed plenty of good drinks, and great food. We chatted with locals, and enjoyed some very warm hospitality. This place reminded me of Dick's Last Resort with so many bras hanging from the ceiling, only I'm sure Dick got his ideas from this gem. Thanks so much, and we look forward to going again soon.

  • Lee K.

When I was a kid first coming to the Keys with my family, I remember my Dad introducing me to an old guy that he said that I "had" to meet. I brushed it off as just another one of my Dad or Grandfather's friends who fled for the Keys when it got to cold up North. It wasn't until my 20's that I found out that man was Captain Tony. One of Captain Tony's legacies in Key West is his saloon, on the site of the original Sloppy's, one of the best dive bars around. It has all of the traditional dive bar features that you've come to love in your lifetime of drinking your way through American History. Bras, dollar bills, and yellowed business cards that may have outlived their original owners litter the ceiling and walls. If you're looking for some West End martini, go somewhere else, though I wouldn't be quite sure how you ended up in Key West to begin with. Come here for the light breeze, a few plastic cupped beers, and paying tribute to the bruised livers that came before you and sat in your very chair. It's a must see and a must drink when in Key West.

    (5)
  • Katie B.

This bar is awesome! This bar reminds me of what bars in Key West are supposed to be like. I believe Jimmy Buffet got his start here. Great music and fun atmosphere. Don't forget to leave your bra or your name on a dollar bill to leave a part of yourself after you're gone.

    (5)
  • Bobblehead B.

This place just is off the charts fun. Sloppy Joe's has the tourists coming in for a beer or two to say they were there. This place has the drinkers. The CHARACTERS. People are not there for just one. The musician when I was there sounded like he knew two guitar chords and should not be singing in his shower, if he takes showers. He was so bad he added to the charm of the place!!! Great time here!!!!

    (4)
  • Courtney F.

Such a unique experience! Had a blast with live country music and pool. An amazing place to have a "let you hair down" kind of night!

    (4)
  • Darren A.

Really liked this place! Bar tenders a lot of fun. You have to have the tonys rum drink special though! Its very good and very cheap for what you get! Interesting decor too....cash bills al over and bras on the ceiling. Visited twice here within a week. One of my fav bars for a drink though.

    (4)
  • Pete F.

4 Stars for the historical significance of this bar. The original Sloppy Joes. Captain Tony was quite a character in his time. Songs have been written about him and some the crazy stories about his are incredible. At one point he was mayor of Key West. I had the privilege of meeting and talking to Tony. The bar is just your basic dive with god drinks and fun people. Look at all of the business cards and money stapled to the ceiling.

    (4)
  • Gabe R.

I'll spare the history lesson of this place being the original Sloppy Joe's and Hemingway's old hangout....you'll learn quick that Hemingway drank everywhere. What I will tell you is that it's a dive bar at it's core. They have very few choices at all. 2 beers on tap and a few in cans. Can beer = dive bar. The 2 draft choices are Bud Light and Capt. Tony's Amber. The decor is a bunch of crappy table and chairs, a game room, a small stage, gift shop and a big ass tree growing right up through the middle of the place and out the roof. That's pretty cool. A ton of bras hanging from the ceiling, of course I wasn't there to witness any freeing of the tatas. You have to come to say you did and it's probably cooler when they have live music other than that just living off the history.

    (3)
  • Katy S.

This bar is in the original Sloppy Joe's location in Key West. It is a true dive bar in every sense of the word, but a ton of fun! The night that I stopped in, they had live music and lots of people were cutting loose and having fun. I had their signature cocktail, which was super delicious (can't remember the name right now). Not too much more to say, but stop into the oldest bar in Key West - it is a sight to see!

    (3)
  • Patrick S.

The old legend live on all the bras the panties business cards license plates still hanging , the tree still stands amazing place to visit while in Key West stand out front throw quarters in the fishes mouth capt we all miss you

    (4)
  • Marianne A.

True dive bar! A hit for us tourists! Our last night in Key West a bunch of us hit this spot. I felt like I was back in college again, or a late night bar in Wrigleyville. Drinks were strong (enough), everyone was friendly, and the dude playing the guitar was awesome- really interactive and funny. Great way to go out strong in Key West!

    (4)
  • Kelly-Ann J.

This is my happy place. The Pirate's Punch will do the trick. We love coming during the day to listen to the live music. The performers are great and funny. Also, love that the bar is dog friendly.

    (4)
  • John S.

Sorry, this place use to be good, but then was then. They haven't had a decent band in years. How can one place have so many terrible bands ?

    (1)
  • Michael B.

Hands down the best bar in the world. I remember (or don't) many a night when I sat there listening to Carl Peachy sing, talking with Captain Tony (RIP), or just sipping a Pirate's Punch or Captain Tony's Ale. A place steeped in history, culture, and authenticity, with a tree growing through the bar. A must visit, and must stay.

    (5)
  • Loren S.

Great local bar with wonderful history. A true old fashioned drinkers bar. Daytime bartenders are much friendlier than the night time bartenders. Always worth a stop when in Key West

    (3)
  • Libby W.

Come and get your history with a pint of beer. Very cool, bartenders are quick and knowledgeable about the history. They will tell you plenty of stories. It's a great stop for the history buff, buffet loving, beer drinker. Plus pints were served in a plastic Captain Tony's cup we could take out on the street with. That is a win for me

    (4)
  • Tom G.

Dive bar (which can be OK)! But this one was pretty gross even for a dive bar. Nasty and dirty. Bartender was talking with some chums who were hanging out and simply cursing for cursing's sake. I'm no prude and use all the words available myself, but they seemed ultra unintelligent and I wanted to be far away from them. If you must say you were there, probably best to get a beer and leave.

  • Shira S.

What a great vibe!! This was the last stop on our unofficial Key West Bar Crawl and it was a great way to end the day. The punch was awesome, the bartender hilarious, and the guitar player spectacular. Turns out our bartender (whose name I am blanking on) was from 10 minutes from where I live and went to a neighboring high school. Clearly, he was personable enough that we learned this fun information. The guitar player took requests and ran with with them. We sang along (albeit, we may have been off key) and enjoyed his flexibility with a large variety of songs. I will definitely return to this fun spot on my next trip to Key West.

    (4)
  • Alison L.

My absolute favorite bar in KW. Sure, it's a bit of a dive but that's part of the appeal. It's much more chill the some of the other bars. We were here so many evenings that the bartenders knew our order. (Bring your cup back for a discount, we kept forgetting but they kindly gave us the discount price anyway since we were there so much!) We played pool and fooseball, hung out at the bar chatting and enjoyed a live band one night. Grab your drink and explore the many articles and photos on the walls, especially if you're a Jimmy Buffett fan.

    (5)
  • Kristi B.

This is our first stop every time we come down to the keys!!! Great atmosphere!! Great run punch specialty drink. Awesome time. Bartender wasn't bad looking either. Never said his name though

    (5)
  • Ann Marie M.

As with most of the service industry in this TOURIST town, the service was unfriendly. The specialty drink was yummy, the 2 singers that were heard were pretty bad. The atmosphere was laid back, the history behind the bar was really neat. The ladies bathroom DISGUSTING. definitely a stop on your bar hopping

    (3)
  • Alex C.

Fun dive bar! We loved it because it reminded us of the pink. Tons of shit on the walls and ceiling.. everyone was very friendly and they had a guy playing guitar soliciting requests. They had awesome bar stools!

    (4)
  • Kolby V.

Extremely historical and interesting bar with great service and an awesome location. I only wish they had a little more options for beer.

    (3)
  • Scott B.

Been here twice. Dive bar with lots of history. Fun place to go. Not a wide selection of beer (only 2 I think) but they also have Rum drinks. They also have a pool room as well as a small room for foosball. I'd say that this is a place that you should stop by while on the island for sure, but not a destination for the entire evening. I'm definitely a fan.
